The Beginning of a South African Wine Legacy

The story of Deetlefs Wine Estate begins long before the family planted its first vines in South Africa. It can be traced back to 3 October 1752, when the Hageveld (voyage 3566.1) departed from Texel, an island in the northern Netherlands, carrying 143 people on its journey from Europe to Batavia, now known as Jakarta, Indonesia.

After almost six months at sea, the Hageveld arrived at the Cape of Good Hope on 21 March 1753. During the voyage, four people sadly lost their lives, while another 14 left the ship at the Cape.

This historic voyage would become part of the remarkable story behind one of South Africa’s oldest family-owned wine estates.
